Re-Unification Part One

GermaniaTHE RHINE RIVER VALLEY

The Niederwald Monument near Rudesheim

Built for the first time Germany "unified" in 1877. The girl is named Germania and she holds the Emperor's crown and the Imperial sword. It's made out of 32 tons of bronze costing more than 1.2 million gold marks. Of that huge sum of money ... 1 million marks was donated by the citizens of Germany.

You can't see it but the base of this Teutonic monument, that looks a little out of place rising 32 meters out of the peaceful vineyards, has relief's of nearly 200 members of German royalty. My tour guide told me that this part of Germany was considered the Royal Stud farm of Europe and some even think it saved Europe from a genetic death. Germany had no shortage of titled offspring...and on the Rhine they built their homes. It must of been a fairly decent neighborhood before the tourists took over.
